Explanation of Benefits (EOB)
Also called: EOB
In plain English
A document from your insurance company explaining how a medical claim was processed. It shows what was billed, what insurance paid, what discounts were applied, and what you owe. An EOB is NOT a bill — it's a statement of how the claim was handled.
Real-world example
After a doctor visit, you receive an EOB showing: Provider charged $400, allowed amount $150, insurance paid $120, you owe $30 (your copay). Two weeks later, the doctor's office sends you a bill for $30.
Why this matters for your bill
Always compare your EOB to the bill you receive from your provider. If the amounts don't match, there may be an error. Never pay a medical bill without first checking your EOB — and never pay a bill that arrives before your EOB.
